Wildfires in Europe doubles twice than average
The data tracks fires over 30 hectares in size, detected through the EU’s Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Since January 1, authorities have recorded 1,628 such incidents, compared to 1,089 during the same period in 2024. Estimated carbon emissions from these fires have reached 14.11 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Fire danger remains high. A seven-day fire weather index outlook for August 11–17 indicates “extreme to very extreme” conditions across much of Europe, with the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, large areas of France, the Balkans, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Austria, and Hungary facing the most severe threat.
Elevated fire risks are also predicted in Sweden, parts of Norway, and eastern Finland, according to the JRC.
